Welcome the Santa Barbara Burlap Bag!

Lina and Vi Burlap Santa Barbara tote bag

We have a brand new burlap bag in the Lina and Vi shop this week that I'm so proud to share - the Santa Barbara burlap bag! This medium sized tote is another burlap bag formed from a beautiful repurposed Pergamino coffee sack. The burlap is lighter and a bit rougher, so it's a perfect casual summer bag.

The Santa Barbara bag took me the larger part of the last week to create, and I'm thrilled with how it turned out. I knew I wanted to do something different with this bag, so I opted for a flap top with a handmade faux button and a magnetic metal snap clasp. It's a small change from the usual open top tote design and a choice that makes it both more unique and practical. The button on this bag is handmade by my husband using Peruvian walnut, so there is extra time spent on this burlap tote to make it one of a kind. Only handmade items like our Santa Barbara bag and our other burlap products offer that personal touch and story that cannot be found in mass manufactured goods.

Similar to our Pergamino tote bag, I designed this bag to be all about the exterior burlap print. The accent colors used in the authentic print are vibrant against the light tan burlap, and the Santa Barbara text is a bold black which is the main focus on the backside. The bottom of this burlap bag is a chocolate brown faux leather with a cream top-stitching detail, which matches the light and dark contrast going on with the burlap sack print.

Inside the bag is one slide pocket in a soft, solid cream colored fabric, a specific choice I made to keep from having a lining fabric that overpowered the beautiful printed burlap. I wanted this bag to be all about the burlap. It's truly a statement bag!

New York Burlap Wristlet

New York Burlap Wristlet - coffee sack bag - linaandvi.etsy.com

Happy Tuesday! I'm back with a few short updates and a brand new burlap New York wristlet to share. This past weekend was ultra-productive around the house and with sewing projects, including a new set of burlap state pillows featuring Washington and Colorado, a freshly painted white bathroom closet, and a marathon of sun salutations at a free yoga session in the park downtown Plymouth. If you know me, you will know that I love being productive. And this weekend, my friends, was a productive weekend. Now I pay the price with incredible soreness from the yoga bending and the closet painting crouching. Worth it. I think.

If you keep updated with our Facebook page, you'll notice that we have a brand new burlap bag in our Etsy shop this week, the New York burlap wristlet. I designed this bag as a small square shape, measuring approximately 7 inches length and width. It's accented with cream faux leather and a thick wrist strap.

On the interior of this burlap clutch is a silky gold solid lining. Given the smaller size of the bag, there are no interior pockets, and it's square shape makes it incredibly roomy for fitting a smaller wallet, large cell phones, and cosmetics. Ditch your large bag during the hot summer nights for a smaller tote like this fun New York burlap clutch bag.

You can find it available for purchase in our Etsy shop here

I hope you're having a great start to the week! It's almost hump day, hey!

Thanks for stopping by,
Erica

Make It: Custom Latitude Longitude Coordinates Pillow

Plymouth Michigan Latitude and longitude pillow DIY

Late this past weekend, I wanted to spend a few hours just making something from start to finish. I didn't really care what it was or what type of making it would be, aside from not being the kitchen with the heat. I have had my mind on making a pillow with the latitude and longitude coordinates of my town as a way to freshen up the decor in my living room, but I never have had a chance to focus on it with a handful of other projects going on these past few months.

I had two pieces of a heavy woven ivory fabric on hand that my mother found at a local consignment shop and gave to me to see if I could use for a sewing project, and it turned out to be just the thing for a large pillow that would need to withstand the constant tossing and occasional puppy rolling on it.

I love how the pillow turned out, and I was happy to be able to get rid of two older pillows I had made and were showing wear. Before doing so though, I cut them open and used the stuffing to stuff this brand new pillow.  Repurposing materials rather than tossing them away is always my first choice if it's a possibility rather than purchasing new.

So, with a handful of basic supplies and a few hours, I can show you how to make a custom coordinates pillow for you home by following the steps below:

Materials
  • Sewing machine and standard foot
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Fabric paint and sponge brush
  • Freezer paper
  • Pencil and X-acto knife OR a Silhouette Cameo
  • Trim (optional)
  • Hand sewing needle
  • Durable fabric .5 to 1 yrd
  • Pins
  • Iron
  • Stuffing
Instructions

1.  To begin, cut two rectangles of equal sizes from your fabric using fabric scissors and a measuring tape. I used 23" by 17", but it is entirely up to you.

2.  Using a hot iron, iron any creases flat on the two pieces.

3.  Now you will need to create your stencil using the freezer paper. There are many how-to guides out there on how to do this. Basically, you will draw or trace your coordinates onto the non-wax side of the freezer paper and cut it out by hand using an X-acto knife. Alternatively, you can use a Silhouette Cameo to electronically cut out the stencil onto a cutting mat layered with the freezer paper, which is what I did in my case.

4. When the stencil is ready, center it onto the right side of one of the rectangles using the measuring tape. Pin the stencil to hold it in place and then use a hot iron and press on top of the paper to adhere it to the fabric.

5.  When the stencil is firmly adhered to the fabric, you will then sponge paint on top of the stencil. I opted for a more distressed look for my pillow, so I left a few unpainted areas on the stencil.
Allow the paint to dry by checking the manufacturer recommendation on drying times. Peel the stencil from the fabric. Use an iron to steam the area that is painted if recommended by the manufacturer.

6.  Once the pillow has been painted, the rest is simple, even if you are new to sewing. Thread your sewing machine with the desired thread. If you have a trim for the perimeter of the pillow, pin that around the interior perimeter of one of the rectangles. Sew and snip loose threads.

7.  Then, place the right sides of the rectangles together. The painted side will NOT be facing you. Pin the perimeter and leave a four inch gap on one of the long sides of the rectangle. This will allow you to turn the pillow case inside out. Sew and snip loose threads. Reinforce the seam with a zigzag stitch if desired.

8.  Using the small gap, turn the pillow case inside out to reveal the exterior of the pillow. Hand stuff the pillow using fiber-fill or an alternative.

9.  Once it is completely stuffed, turn the seams inside on the remaining four inch gap and pin together. Hand-stitch with needle and thread to close the gap. Snip any loose ends.

That's it! This is a fun and rewarding project, as now I get to see the result of my effort every time I walk into the living plus I get the utility of a comfortable pillow.

If you give this a try, please let me know how it goes! I'd love to hear your feedback!

New Burlap Zipper Pouches in Stock Now

Gold and White large burlap zipper pouch by Lina and Vi - linaandvi.etsy.com

After a week off earlier this month, I'm back at my sewing machine creating a bunch of new items for the Lina and Vi Etsy shop this month. I'm happy to report that I'm feeling refreshed and inspired with the summer season and warmer weather upon us here in Michigan. Of course, a week off means that many things built up while I was out, and I'm finally feeling caught up and ready to tackle the next to-dos on my list this week. Hooray!

This week I worked on five new small 4" by 6" burlap zipper pouches each with a different style and color of patterned lining fabric. They are super cute, and now you can purchase a set of two in addition to a set of three or a single pouch.

I also sewed up a new larger zipper pouch with a flat, faux leather cream bottom. The interior of this bag features a high-quality white cotton fabric with shimmery gold thatched print. I fell in love with this fabric when I found it in the remnants pile a couple of weeks ago. I love that the color is neutral but it is still fun with a layer of sophistication. I have a little bit extra, and I'm thinking that I may be embarking on some selfish-sewing soon to use it up for something around my home or my wardrobe!

We're having fantastic weather this weekend here in Michigan, and I'm torn whether to stay outside or head inside to my sewing room. I think I may just need to bring the sewing outside to my patio and have the best of both worlds. I'm not sure what my neighbors would think hearing a sewing machine outside, but hey, why not, right?

I hope you're enjoying your weekend! Remember to visit our Etsy shop to see details on these items and to grab a few before we run out again.

Enjoy!

Announcing Lina and Vi + Beauty Haven Plymouth!

Beauty Haven and Lina and Vi Plymouth MI

Hello and happy Thursday! I'm popping in during our short break to share some exciting news with you! I'm thrilled to announce that Lina and Vi burlap zipper pouches and cosmetic bags are now available for purchase locally at Beauty Haven in downtown Plymouth, Michigan! If you live around the metro Detroit area or are visiting the downtown Plymouth area this summer for one of the many summer fairs and music events, I highly suggest you visit Beauty Haven on Forest.

Beauty Haven is a locally owned small business, like ourselves, which offers services like facials, waxing, and skin treatments. The front of their boutique showcases a curated collection of beauty products for purchase as well as small gifts and a significant selection of essential oils. They are expanding their front boutique to include locally handmade products like soaps and now Lina and Vi burlap zipper pouches, which are perfect as gifts on their own or paired with a set of beauty items.

I'm a huge fan of supporting small businesses, and even more if it's a local business. This is our third local brick and mortar shop that now carries Lina and Vi items here in Michigan, and I am astounded. I never thought that this small project would take me as far as it has these past 2.5 years. The support from the community and from you has made it what it is today. Just down the block from Beauty Haven on Forest, you can find our stenciled burlap pillows at Birch Wood boutique, and our burlap zipper bags at RoosRoast Coffee in Ann Arbor. Visit their Facebook pages to get their hours and location and make it a point to stop in their shops this summer - you may find something you weren't expecting!

Thank you for the continued support with Lina and Vi. The first 6 months of this year have been incredible, and I can't wait to see what the next 6 months have in store!
